Safe School Petition
Why is this necessary?
1. The TX Anti-bullying bill (HB 1942) is not a "comprehensive" policy that "enumerates" at-risk students. Research shows that those enumerations increase a policy's effectiveness, even more so, if staff are trained to intervene in bias-based bullying.
2. All school boards will be rewriting their anti-bullying policies to be HB1942 compliant. They have the power to go beyond HB 1942 and make them fully comprehensive. (The DISD anti-bullying policy is regarded as the best in the state for inclusion of LGBT.)
3. "If the people lead, the leaders will follow." The legislators and educational leaders need to know how important it is to foster a safe school climate for all students.

To: Texas Legislators, School District Superintendents, and School Board Presidents
It is time to "connect the dots" between the Texas anti-bullying law (HB 1942) and suicide prevention law (HB 1386). Asher Brown’s parents, of Houston, TX, reported that their son was bullied to the point of suicide because of his size, religion, dress, and the perception of being gay. We urge you to develop anti-bullying programs and enumerated policies that raise educators' awareness of the students at greatest risk: anyone who appears different from most students in race, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression
