Friday, Week Ten
I was at the gym yesterday —an all too rare occurrence in my life—and, as I did a particular exercise, I got to the place where I was tired and wanted to quit. However, I knew that pushing through and doing more than I wanted to was necessary if I was going to become stronger and healthier. Of course, there is a point where you can push too hard and injure yourself or, at my age, be so sore you can't work out the next day.
That seems to be a parable for living in tough times. To become stronger, we need to push ourselves beyond what is easy and comfortable:
We need to push limits of our generosity, without destroying our capacity to give in the future.
We need to push ourselves to take more risks when our fears make us cautious, without being foolhardy.
We need to find creative ways to do more with less, without simply resigning ourselves to a downward spiral.
I think the current economic climate provides us with great opportunities for growth, rediscovery, renewal and reinvention. We can do little to change the economy; what we can change is ourselves, our attitudes, our values, our vision. To do that, we all are going to need to push beyond what is comfortable. Blessings,
