Thursday, Week Ten

Archbishop and martyr Oscar Romero said:

If you need to feel hope, you're courting despair, and, if you court despair, you'll stop working. … Try to have faith instead to do what you can, and stop worrying about whether or not you're effective. Worry about what is possible for you to do, which is always greater than you can imagine.

All too often the pursuit of the perfect hinders our willingness to do what is already in our hand to do. We cannot fix everything. Jesus didn't say that we were the food for a starving world, but that we were the salt of the earth. As Da Vita McCAllister, a UCC colleague says, “In almost every situation we can always ‘put a little something on it to make it better.'”
