Wednesday, Week Ten

One of my daughters is taking AP Economics. When she told me, I thought, “Good, maybe now she can explain to me what is going on with the economy.” While it is true that in a room with three economists you will get four opinions, I don't remember a time when I'd have as much confidence in my teenage daughter's predictions as I would one of them.

My theory is that they have missed the mark so badly because they have forgotten the fear factor. That is, they have left out of their calculations the fact that, since 9/11, our own government has consistently and persistently sought to make us afraid.

As someone who flies a lot, I can't help but wonder what it means anymore that we are at level orange alert. How long can fear be sustained before it loses all meaning and numbs us to hope? Out economy is suffering because people are afraid: afraid to invest, afraid to take chances, afraid of the future. Frankly we have no one to blame but our leaders who have exploited fear for political gain.

Our only hope is a revival of faith, faith that our fate is not in the hands of politicians, economists or terrorists. We came from God, and to God we shall return. Trusting in the love of that God is the only antidote … or, as the Bible says, “Perfect love casts out all fear.”
