Friday, Week Five

In a recent meeting, I watched as an older man in the group repeatedly ran errands, collected empty glasses, brought people soft drinks and generally worked tirelessly to make the endless meeting as painless as possible. I didn't know the man and assumed he was the support person assigned to help facilitate the meeting. It was only at the end of the day when the moderator called on him for a report that I learned who he was.

Although he was, perhaps, the most successful person in the room, he was clearly someone who took Jesus' call to servanthood seriously. Ironically, those who were paid to provide support to the team let him serve them, too. They were oblivious to the irony, and the fact, that he had what they lacked. Perhaps he had what we all lack. Vocationally, he was successful, but, of greater important, it was clear that, by living out the Spirit of Jesus, he was succeeding at being like the Human One whose example we are all called to follow.
