Tuesday, Week Five

I'm furious. I read a news story recently about a 52-year-old jobless Colorado woman who is undergoing treatments for Leukemia. Her health insurance company dropped her because she underpaid her premium by a penny. A penny! Now she doesn't know what she will do.

The courts consistently rule that health care is a for-profit business in this country, so they protect the profiteers. Since Capitalism is the real religion of America, their position isn't surprising. What is surprising is how many of us call ourselves Christians and still support, without question, the religion of profit. If our God was not green, we would rise up and say, “No. Jesus would never refuse to care for someone because they lacked a penny, and neither should we.”

Making life-giving medicine a matter of profit and loss rather than a matter of pure compassion is a SIN! If we remain silent, the blood of the poor really is on our hands as much as the millionaire insurance CEOs.
