Herb Miller tells the following story about Thomas Carlyle:

He was dressed to go out for a Sunday speech before a large crowd. His mother was sitting beside the front door. As Carlyle passed her, she said to him, “And where might you be going, Thomas?”

“Mother,” he replied, “I'm going to tell the people what is wrong with the world.”

His mother replied, “Aye, Thomas, but are you going to tell them what to do about it?”

Listening to the talking heads on TV speak with such authority, conviction and, often, vitriol, I can't help but wonder: And just what have you accomplished in life that qualifies you to tell us what is wrong with the world? Everyone can be a critic, but we should listen only to those who are making a difference.

Criticism is not the problem. Cynicism is.
