Wednesday

American humorist and writer Artemus Ward once said, “The trouble with so many people is that they know so many things that aren't so.” I thought that pattern was invented by political commentators who seem to think that repeating something often enough makes it true. It doesn't.

Many of the things we learned as children are not true, but we have never examined them. I often find that, when I challenge people's long-held beliefs, their first reaction is utter disbelief that I'd disagree with something that is obviously factual. Healthy people, though, are open to reconsideration of almost everything. Unhealthy ones want to destroy the challenger.

In my own life, I've discovered that almost anything I'm unwilling to question I secretly know is wrong.
