Monday, Week Four

I once heard a man talk about what it was like to sail around the world alone. He pointed out that millions of people sail solo. “Many take their boats out for hours all alone and then return to dock,” he said. “The only difference is that I did it longer.”

As I've thought about that, I realized that, many times, the difference between an accompanist and a virtuoso is the length of practice time. Oh, talent may play a role, but, without the investment of time, who knows? The great Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate once was called a genius by a famous critic. “Genius!” he snorted. “For 37 years I've practiced 14 hours a day, and now they call me a genius.”

Who knows what kind of genius resides in you? The world may never know if we give up and sail safely back to our comfort zone too soon.
