Monday, Week Three
My friend Donna Schaper, in Hard Times , her book of sermons on the subject of hope, writes:
The difference between optimism and hope is that optimism has humanity as its foundation; hope has God. One is a better soil in which to grow than the other. Following the crowd permits the optimism of society; it does not permit the hope of Jesus.
It seems to me that substituting optimism for hope is one of the reasons our society has become so fear-based. We all have been disappointed often enough by our fellow travelers on this journey often enough to lose our sense of optimism. Hope is rooted in our confidence in the One from whom we came and to whom we shall ultimately return.
Blessings,
