Tuesday, Week Ten

Thomas Merton said, “There is no spiritual life without persistent struggle and interior conflict.” While I agree that struggle and inner conflict can prompt spiritual growth, “it ain't necessarily so.” What I mean is that those things don't automatically cause us to grow. All the rain in the world won't cause fruit to grow from a rock.

If our hearts grow cold and closed there will be no spiritual growth of any kind. Unfortunately, since we live in an age of cynicism, that seems to be all that grows when the rains of pain fall on our lives.

Spiritual growth requires that our hearts be open to the warmth of God's love and to the gentle breath of the Spirit. That is ultimately a choice we must make. We don't control the weather of our lives, but we do control the thermostats.

Blessings,
