Thursday, Week Eight

Americans see 38,000 advertisements for consumer products a year. How can we escape our media trance? How can our souls be disinfected, and our minds de-programmed? The toxins of materialism and consumption have seeped deep into our bones. What we have, and what we do, and what we wear all have become a part of who we are, or at least of who we think we are.

I remember a shirt I particularly loved as a kid. I wanted to sleep in it and wear it every day. My mother had the silly idea it needed to be washed periodically. One day she said to me, “Mike, if you don't take that shirt off, it's going to grow into your skin.”

I was never sure if she was kidding, but I have known people who held their things so close that they seemed to grow into their hearts.
