Tuesday, Week Eight
Today candidates invoke God's blessing on America at the end of every speech, rather than asking God to bless countries that are poor or strife torn. Athletes cross themselves before going up to bat, kicking a field goal, or taking a free throw. Once, when a player crossed himself before stepping up to the plate, the great Yogi Berra shouted from the dugout, “Hey fella, why don't you just let the Almighty enjoy the game.”
Abraham Lincoln once corrected someone who stated confidently that the North would win the Civil War because God was on their side. President Lincoln observed, “Madam, the real question is, ‘Are we on God's side?'”
That is the real issue for us, too. Being a Christian isn't about getting God on our side. It isn't accepting Jesus so God will let us into heaven. Being a Christian is about choosing to be on the same side as God. If I read my Bible correctly, God is on the side of the poor, the hurting, the lonely and the weak. Blessings,
