Friday, Week Seven
I was writing thank you notes to people who gave money to Hope for Peace & Justice in honor of my birthday. I discovered that there were a couple of notes that were very difficult to write. One was to someone who feels more like family than a friend, someone I could not imagine not having in my life. The other was to someone who is profoundly poor. Theirs was by no means the largest gift, but it was clearly the greatest. Their sacrifice shamed me with the realization that I give out of my abundance, but they, like the widow with her mite, gave out of their need. They were probably the poorest dressed and the least educated people at the party, but perhaps the greatest souls. Is abject poverty required before the rest of us learn to what true greatness is?
What does it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose your own soul?
Jesus from Nazareth Blessings,
