Thursday, Week Six
When I feed the poor you call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor you call me a communist.
Archbishop Dom Helder Camara
I've been quoting this a lot lately, in part because I have the feeling that Christians believe that simply feeding the hungry is enough. It is important, but it is also critical that we keep asking why people are poor in the richest nation on earth. Why are we the only country where health care is a for-profit commodity rather than a basic human right? Why are we willing to pay for wars, but not education?
Yes, we need to care for those in need, but failing to address the root causes of suffering makes us complicit in those causes. The Church of Jesus Christ must be the voice of the prophets crying out for justice and peace. Have you spoken up today? Blessings,
