Wednesday, Week Six

I spend a lot of time on airplanes these days. I was struck recently by the fact that, when those who sit in first class were invited to board the plane, they also invited members of the military to board. That isn't really a problem, but it did make me wonder about why we value who we value.

Standing next to me was a woman who I'd guess was in her 80s. She told me she was going to Dallas to take care of her great-grandson so that his mother, her granddaughter, could have surgery. This grandmother was clearly worried. She was humped over and walked with a cane, but here she was flying halfway across the country to care for the fourth generation of her family.

I wonder why they didn't ask her to get on first. No, she didn't know how to shoot a gun, but is that really what it takes to be a hero in this country these days?

Blessings,
