Tuesday, Week Six
I was reading a list of amusing answers that children gave on tests. One little girl was asked to define the word “people.” She wrote, “People are composed of girls and boys and men and women. Girls are nice. Boys are no good until they grow up and get married. My mother is a woman, which is a grown-up girl with children. My father is so nice that I think he must have been a girl when he was a boy.”
Having served the world's largest predominantly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender church for more than two decades, I can appreciate her gender confusion. In fact, I appreciate gender confusion period. One of the gifts I have tried to give my two daughters has been to disabuse them of society's definition of what it means to be a man or a woman. This, of course, has meant instilling in them values that serve as an antidote to sexism and that liberate them to be themselves despite anyone's role expectation.
Wouldn't it have been a wonderful thing if someone had given us that freedom when we were kids? It isn't too late you know. “Sisters and brothers, you are free in the name of the Living God who is both masculine and feminine.” Blessings,
