Equal
Rights Issues
Equal
rights for all people, not just the majority. It is a moral
issue when any minority group is denied equal civil rights.
A constitutional amendment banning same-gender marriage,
forced on the country by right-wing religious-political
extremists, would be the first amendment in the nation’s
history that actually denies, rather than guarantees, civil
rights for a particular group of citizens. So-called “defense
of marriage” legislation will be looked back upon as
just as foolish as segregation laws and laws prohibiting
mixed-race marriages are now. Gay people have been getting
married for years. No amount of legislation can prevent two
people of the same gender from making holy, lifetime commitments
to each other. This is not a religious issue; it is a civil
rights issue. Currently, the federal government denies a
minority segment of the population more than 1,100 civil
rights even though they have paid taxes—rights that
are taken for granted by heterosexual couples. Hope for Peace & Justice
is fighting the immorality of discrimination and special
rights for select citizens.
