“Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens” this Sunday Night

In observance of World AIDS Day, the Cathedral of Hope and Art for Peace & Justice presents an encore performance of “Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens” to benefit the Cathedral of Hope’s AIDS Crisis Fund Sunday, December 2 at 7 p.m. in the main sanctuary. With book and lyrics by Tony Award-nominated Bill Russell (“Side Show”) and music by Janet Hood, “Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens” is a celebration of lives lost to AIDS told in free-verse monologues with a blues, jazz and rock score. At once comic and powerfully moving, this play with music tells the tale from the point of view of some 30 individuals who died as a result of contracting AIDS from a wide variety of sources. The cast of 40 will feature, among others, Cathedral of Hope favorites Denise Lee and Gary Floyd, well-known Dallas theater performers Sara Shelby-Martin, Cedric Neal and John Garcia, and staff members of the Cathedral of Hope, including Rector and Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Jo Hudson.

A $10 suggested donation will be collected at the door. A love offering also will be taken. One hundred percent of the money in the AIDS Crisis Fund goes toward direct assistance for people living with HIV/AIDS. Please note: “Elegies …” is rated PG-13 for strong language.

VOICES OF PEACE

March 1, 2008
2:00 p.m.
Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center

On the afternoon of March 1, 2008, thousands of people will gather to honor one of the greatest peace-makers of our time, Dr. Maya Angelou.

In addition to the inspiring message from Dr. Angelou, the Meyerson will be filled with extraordinary music presented by the Voices of Peace Chorus, New Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Male Chorus from the First Baptist Church, Hamilton Park and the Lay Family Organ.  The Voices of Peace Chorus includes members of the Turtle Creek Chorale, The Women’s Chorus of Dallas, One Achord and the Cathedral of Hope Sanctuary Choir.   At the culmination of the afternoon, the entire audience of 2,000+ will join in singing “Dona Nobis Pacem” as we pray for peace in our world.

During the month of March, 2008, the international organization, Song of Peace, is organizing an effort to encourage one million people around the world to sing  Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace) in their community, church, synagogue, school or on a street corner.  There is no better way to move the world toward a culture of peace rather than war than by raising our voices in support of peace.  Hope for Peace & Justice will begin the month-long initiative by sponsoring an afternoon of raising our voices for peace at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Tickets for the event range in price from $30 - $100 and will be available for sale beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 2 at the Cathedral of Hope fellowship hall.  Tickets will go on sale to the general public December 3 at www.h4pj.org.

$500 Loge Box seats include a VIP reception, valet parking, and are on sale through H4PJ.  For those tickets and other sponsorship and underwriting packages, please contact Jim Powell at 214-351-1432.

Turkeys
This week President Bush pardoned his seventh turkey...
I realize this has become a presidential tradition (though I suspect they all still manage to have turkey for dinner on Thanksgiving Day). Still, I was struck by the extreme irony of THIS president pardoning a turkey, when, as governor of Texas, he presided over so many executions and scarcely afforded them any thought or compassion at all. He also presided over the execution of Saddam Hussein, the leader of a country he invaded. While few doubt that Hussein and most of those executed were evil people, one wonders what the President's turkey did to deserve a pardon while millions of others die for dinner. MORE...
