A Sacred ConversationRev. Michael S. Piazza

This Sunday, pastors across the United Church of Christ, including Rev. Michael Piazza, President of Hope for Peace & Justice, will preach on the subject of race in hopes of beginning a sacred conversation, a dialogue that is needed in our pews, our homes and the hallways of power across our country. The UCC is holding this national dialogue in order to foster a spirit of healing and unity in our churches and communities. As Rev. Piazza will note in his sermon, “In response to the media’s feeding frenzy on some of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s more controversial sermon excerpts, Senator Barack Obama gave what was termed a ‘major address on race’ in which he called for a national conversation on the subject. By and large that call has been ignored, but the United Church of Christ has taken out full page ads in both the New York Times and USA Today. The denominational leadership has asked that the nearly 6,000 UCC congregations take that challenge seriously. So, we join our voices with theirs. I am proud to be a part of a denomination that holds such values so passionately.”

It is appropriate that this sacred conversation takes place this weekend, as, on Saturday, we also observe the 54th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision “Brown v. Board of Education,” which stated that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” As we continue to struggle with issues of race in our world, we invite you to join Rev. Piazza, and other members of H4PJ, in worship this Sunday, either in person at Cathedral of Hope or via the internet.
