Five Years Later …
Last week marked the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq. I was asked to speak at a press conference. I talked about the fact that we have been at war more than one-third of my 14- and 15-year-old daughters’ lives. They will have to work the rest of their lives to pay off the debt we have accumulated by borrowing money, mostly, from China. They also will have to live in a world made considerably more dangerous by all the enemies this war has made for the U.S.
One morning last week, on the way to school, my youngest daughter remarked about how much good could have been done with the half a trillion dollars this war already has cost. We could have fed every hungry human and made billions of friends rather than killing tens of thousands of innocent Afghans and Iraqis and making millions of people into our enemies.
The President looked at five disastrous years in Iraq, and, because this year is not as bloody and violent as last, he declared victory. The media, which is largely owned by defense industry contractors, simply reported it as fact. How stupid do they think we are? They obviously won’t speak the truth, so we must. It is vital that we not allow the illusion that this war is a success in any way to be perpetuated. War is not the solution; it is the problem.
Who will heal the world? Listen to this and find out!
