Dear
friend,
It is possible the House will vote on a bill this week that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the Federal Hate Crimes laws. The Religious Right is mobilizing against this important piece of legislation. The far-right American Family Association sent out this Action Alert to its members this week:
Bible-believing Christians and Jews face an onslaught of bills that will inevitably create federally protected “class status” for homosexuals, bisexuals, transvestites, “transgender” and “transsexual” persons. …
Obviously, we have many concerns with a bill like this – including the fact that it is constitutionally suspect, unfair, dangerous, indefinable, unnecessary and un-American. …
Let’s face it: homosexual and transgender activists know full well that the church is one of last bastions in Western culture that has yet to cave in to the demands of a radical agenda that seeks to redefine fundamental concepts such as marriage, family and gender. …
Clearly, a grave threat to our civil liberties and the liberties of our children and grandchildren is now upon us. |
Clearly, the Religious Right is scared that this Hate Crimes bill would give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people certain federal protections. Currently, attacks on LGBT people is the third most common category of hate crimes in America. The Religious Right is pulling out all the stops in order to block this important bill.
It’s time to take a stand against the exclusion-based theology of the Religious Right and demand your elected officials support this Hate Crimes bill.
