Hope for Peace & Justice Partners
with Stewpot Open Art Studio

Silent auction to benefit at-risk
and homeless artists, H4PJ

Hope for Peace & Justice, a non-profit ministry of Cathedral of Hope, has partnered with the Stewpot Open Art Studio to feature works of art by homeless and at-risk adults in a silent auction. One hundred percent of the opening bid on the works by these artists will benefit the art program. The auction continues this Sunday, October 26, before and after each morning service at Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road in Dallas, and culminates at a one-night only show on Saturday, November 1, from 5:30-10 p.m. in the lobby of Bank of Texas, 4217 Swiss Avenue; Dallas, TX 75204.

The Stewpot Open Art Studio, a ministry of First Presbyterian Church, offers a space where artists of all skill levels—from professionals to people who just want a safe place to enjoy creating—are welcome to come and explore. Although these individuals may be ignored, or worse, when they are out on the streets, in the Stewpot art room they are treated with respect as their creative skills are nurtured. The Stewpot supplies materials and frequently locates places where the finished artwork can be shown to the public. “Partnering with the Stewpot Open Art Studio is a natural fit for Hope for Peace & Justice and Art for Peace & Justice,” said Dr. Tim Seelig, Art for Peace & Justice program director. “By nurturing God-given creativity, the art program also is giving hope to those who need it most. We are glad to share in this work.”

Many of the people who were on the streets when they joined the art class have improved their lives and are no longer homeless. They still participate, seeking the fellowship of the artistic community that has been created. Several works by of one of these success stories, Charles William, are featured in the auction.

Lord's Leap

Having developed a love of art from his aunt at the age of three, Charles let his interest lapse as he grew older. After becoming indigent five years ago, Charles found himself at the Stewpot with his mother, seeking assistance. Through a conversation with another of the shelter’s clients, Charles found his way to the art room and to new hope. He is now a national award-winning artist, and after several years of living on the street, today Charles lives in an apartment that he partially pays for by selling his art at the Stewpot. “I feel God, the Creator, is an artist,” Charles said, “so I create art to be closer to him, or her.”
